Sisters of Avalon

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Sisters of Avalon is Cyndi Lauper's fifth studio album. It was released on 16 October 1996 in Japan and on 1 April 1997 in the United States, on Sony. The title refers to the book The Mists of Avalon, which tells the Arthurian legend from the perspective of its female characters. She wrote many of the songs with Jan Pulsford, who had become the keyboardist in her band.

The sound combines electronics with traditional instruments such as guitar, zither, dulcimer and omnichord. The lyrics deal with indifference and discrimination. Love to Hate and You Don't Know target the media, Ballad of Cleo & Joe is about the double life of a transvestite and Say a Prayer about AIDS. Mother is an ode to Gaea. Critics were glowing, but the album was released late and sold poorly, except in Japan. The Songwriters Hall of Fame calls the title song a key song.
