Hat Full of Stars

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Hat Full of Stars was released in 1993, four years after A Night to Remember, which had been poorly received and sold little. On this album Cyndi Lauper moved away from her pop sound and chose alternative music. Junior Vasquez, a dance music artist, co-produced, and many tracks rest on synthetic loops and percussion.

She wrote about social issues. Sally's Pigeons is about abortion, A Part Hate about racism, Product of Misery and Broken Glass about domestic violence and Lies about incest. A Part Hate was originally intended as an anti-apartheid song for her second album, but the label found that too political. The sleeve is inspired by a photograph of the actress Mary Pickford. Critics responded mostly favourably. Rolling Stone called it her most ambitious record, and Billboard spoke of a metamorphosis. The public response was cool, except in Japan and France, where it went gold.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Who Let In The Rain and compare it with Time After Time, which Billboard said it reminded them of.
