Roots

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Roots is Curtis Mayfield's second studio album and was released in October 1971. It received much praise from various magazines and is regarded as one of his best records and as a classic of 1970s soul. It reached number six on the Billboard Top R&B Albums chart.

AllMusic reviewer Bruce Eder wrote that the album takes off on some of the sweetest and most eloquent soul sounds heard up to then. He sings and plays guitar himself, with Craig McMullen on guitar and backing vocals by Leroy Hutson and Michael Hawkins. Johnny Pate and Riley Hampton wrote the arrangements. In 1999 a reissue appeared on Rhino with four extra tracks, including a demo version of Underground.
