Curtis Mayfield
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Curtis Mayfield was born in Chicago in 1942. He was the singer, guitarist and songwriter of the soul group The Impressions and in 1968 founded his own record label, Curtom. His music for Super Fly (1972) was a huge success. The album topped the American chart, and Freddie's Dead and Superfly each sold more than a million copies. The lyrics do not glorify the drug life but warn against it. He then wrote and produced soundtracks for other singers: Claudine (1974) with Gladys Knight & the Pips, Let's Do It Again (1975) with the Staple Singers and Sparkle (1976) with Aretha Franklin. In 1990 he was paralysed in an accident on stage.
