The Hawk Flies High

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Hawk Flies High is a 1957 album by tenor saxophonist Coleman Hawkins. He plays in a sextet most of whose members come from bebop: trombonist J.J. Johnson, trumpeter Idrees Sulieman, pianist Hank Jones and bassist Oscar Pettiford. Only guitarist Barry Galbraith and drummer Jo Jones had a different background. The repertoire is a mixture of original pieces by the band members and standards. Chant is by Hank Jones, Juicy Fruit by Sulieman, and Laura is a well-known ballad. Sancticity is by Hawkins himself. In this way a veteran of the swing era and a group of bebop musicians meet in one studio.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Laura and notice how Hawkins plays out the familiar melody on his tenor saxophone. Can you hear how the rhythm section quietly supports him?
