The Gilded Hawk

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Gilded Hawk is an album by tenor saxophonist Coleman Hawkins, recorded at the end of 1956 and the beginning of 1957 and released on Capitol. Here he plays with an orchestra arranged and conducted by Glenn Osser. The line-up of that orchestra is not known.

The repertoire consists of well-known standards, such as Autumn Leaves, Stranger in Paradise, Everything Happens to Me and It Had to Be You. The string arrangements are soft and sugary. Hawkins mainly plays the melody, with great care for his tone. Critic Scott Yanow of AllMusic therefore considered the record one of the saxophonist's least essential: the strings weigh heavily on the music and little of note happens.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Autumn Leaves: notice how Hawkins almost only follows the melody and lays his warm tenor tone over the strings.
