Stealing Second

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Stealing Second is Chris Thile's second solo album and was released in 1997 on Sugar Hill. He wrote all fourteen songs himself. He plays mandolin and bouzouki. Bluegrass musician Sam Bush produced the record and himself played fiddle and guitar. Others taking part include dobro player Jerry Douglas, fiddler Stuart Duncan, guitarists Russ Barenberg and David Grier and banjo players Alison Brown and Scott Vestal. Scott Thile plays bass.

The title song reached number 12 on the US bluegrass charts in 1997. The pieces are often short, between a minute and a half and five minutes, with exceptions such as The Game Is Afoot at almost seven minutes.

Listening tip. Listen to Stealing Second and notice how the mandolin takes the lead, with banjo and fiddle for company.
