Not All Who Wander Are Lost
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Not All Who Wander Are Lost is the third solo album by mandolinist Chris Thile and was released in 2001 on Sugar Hill. Even so, it is regarded as his first major record. In 2000 his group Nickel Creek had already gone platinum with a debut album, and that also brought attention to his own work.
The music builds on earlier work and is largely inspired by bluegrass and newgrass. Thile plays the mandolin and produced and mixed the record himself. He brought in many skilled players, including Béla Fleck on banjo, Jerry Douglas on dobro, Edgar Meyer on bass and Stuart Duncan and Sara Watkins on fiddle. The titles refer to Tolkien and to the comic strip Calvin and Hobbes: the album title comes from a poem in The Fellowship of the Ring.
