Leading Off... · Chris Thile was thirteen when his first solo album was released on 25 September 1994 on Sugar Hill Records. He is counted among the newgrass musicians and plays mandolin, but on this album also fiddle and guitar, and he made the arrangements himself. Scott Thile plays bass, Sean Watkins mandolin, and guests such as fiddler Byron Berline, banjo player Dennis Caplinger and fiddler Stuart Duncan join in. Pete Wernick, also a banjo player, produced.
Well over half of the thirteen tracks are by Thile himself, sometimes together with Watkins. In addition there are Panhandle Rag by Leon McAuliffe, Old Dangerfield by Bill Monroe, the traditional Salt Creek, a medley of old favourites and the hymn How Great Thou Art.
