C’est Chic

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

C’est Chic · C'est Chic was Chic's second studio album and was released in 1978 on Atlantic Records. All the songs were written by Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers. The album contains Le Freak, the group's big hit, which in October 1978 topped the US Hot 100, the R&B chart and the club chart. I Want Your Love was also a success.

It was the band's most commercially successful album and spent eleven weeks at the top of the US R&B chart. Billboard named it the R&B album of 1979. In Europe it first came out as Très Chic, with a daring sleeve and a different track list. That version was withdrawn and replaced by C'est Chic with a less risqué sleeve. The critical response was mixed: one paper spoke of a stylish take on disco, another found little of note apart from Le Freak.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Le Freak and notice how the chorus and the rhythm section stay in a tight, repeating pattern from start to finish.
