The Sonny Side of Chér

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Sonny Side of Chér · The Sonny Side of Chér was released on 28 March 1966, shortly after the success of Cher's debut album. She recorded it while she was also in the charts as one half of Sonny & Cher. Sonny Bono produced the record. He kept to the formula of the first album: newly arranged covers, supplemented with new songs from his own hand.

The track list draws on folk and pop, with influences from French chanson. It includes Like a Rolling Stone by Bob Dylan, It's Not Unusual, The Girl From Ipanema and Milord by Edith Piaf. According to the source, Ol' Man River already shows how powerful her voice was. Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down), written by Bono, became her first solo hit in the US top ten. Where Do You Go was the first single. The critical response was mixed: Billboard found the record well produced, while AllMusic called it formulaic.
