East Coasting
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Charles Mingus recorded East Coasting in New York on 16 August 1957 and released it that autumn. The group consisted of trombonist Jimmy Knepper, trumpeter Clarence Shaw, Shafi Hadi on saxophone, drummer Dannie Richmond and pianist Bill Evans.
The record contains five original pieces by Mingus and the standard Memories of You. AllMusic calls it one of his lesser-known band sessions, but finds the music stimulating: it stretches the boundaries of bop and is never predictable. The 1993 CD reissue added extra recordings, including alternate takes.
Listening
Listening tip. In West Coast Ghost, the longest track, listen to how the soloists take turns and to what the pianist does underneath.
