Masterjam

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Masterjam is the eighth album by the funk band Rufus and the seventh with singer Chaka Khan. It was released in 1979 and was their first record on MCA, which had taken over the ABC label. The producer was Quincy Jones, with whom Khan had already worked a year earlier. He brought in the Seawind Horns and the Brothers Johnson, and the band even plays a funky version of his own Body Heat.

That year Khan also had solo success with I'm Every Woman, while she was still attached to the band. Tony Maiden sang more and more songs for Rufus. Do You Love What You Feel became the group's fourth number 1 on the R&B chart. Masterjam topped the R&B album chart and reached number 14 on the pop chart.

Listening tip. Listen to Body Heat, a song by Quincy Jones himself, and notice how the band turns it into a funky version.
