Saxuality

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Saxuality · With this debut album the Dutch alto saxophonist Candy Dulfer made her name internationally. She produced it together with Ulco Bed, who also took care of keyboards, guitars, synth bass and drum programming. The album is mainly instrumental, but Dulfer and Bed also sing along on a few tracks. Frans Hendrix handled the recording and Susan Rogers mixed the album in Los Angeles. Some editions also include the worldwide hit Lily Was Here, with Dave Stewart on guitar.

The album entered the chart in the Netherlands at number 4 and went gold. It also reached the American and British charts and sold more than a million copies worldwide. It received a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Jazz Album. To promote the record, Dulfer toured Europe and the United States.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Saxuality and notice how the alto saxophone carries the melody while the programming and the keyboards lay the rhythm beneath it.
