Mix-Up

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Album

Mix-Up is the debut album by the English band Cabaret Voltaire. It was released on 23 October 1979 on the label Rough Trade. The line-up consisted of Stephen Mallinder on vocals, bass and percussion, Chris Watson on synthesizers and tapes, and Richard H. Kirk on guitar, synthesizers and wind instruments, with Haydn Boyes Weston on drums.

The record includes a cover of No Escape, a song by The Seeds from 1966. The first reactions were divided. One reviewer called the album interesting but only rarely appealing, another heard fascinating music that seldom hangs together. Later, Head Heritage wrote that it was a snapshot of a brief period in British post-punk, when bands ventured into a strange, homemade white dub landscape. AllMusic too saw it as an important part of the post-punk of 1978 to 1982.
