Buddy Rich Sings Johnny Mercer

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Buddy Rich Sings Johnny Mercer · In 1956 drummer Buddy Rich recorded an album on which he sang himself. It contains only songs for which Johnny Mercer wrote the lyrics. The composers vary from track to track: Harold Arlen supplies a good number, including Out of This World and One for My Baby, while Skylark is by Hoagy Carmichael. Buddy Bregman wrote the arrangements and conducted the orchestra.

It was the first of three vocal albums he recorded. The band includes trumpeter Harry Sweets Edison, tenor saxophonist Ted Nash and pianist Jimmy Rowles, among others. Alvin Stoller is also behind the drums, alongside the singer himself. The result is a record on which a well-known jazz drummer takes on the role of singer, in a series of familiar songs from the American repertoire.
