Letter to You

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Letter to You · Bruce Springsteen was struggling with writer's block until, in April 2019, he wrote intensively for a week and a half. The death of George Theiss, an old bandmate, played a part. In November 2019 he recorded with the E Street Band in his own studio, in four days. Producers were Ron Aniello and himself. It was done live, without demos and with minimal overdubs. It was the first album with the band since High Hopes in 2014.

The lyrics are about regret, growing older and dying. Three songs he had already written before his 1973 debut: If I Was the Priest, Janey Needs a Shooter and Song for Orphans. He found old recordings when he was putting together a compilation album. Because of the pandemic the band could not tour, so the album was promoted with an online radio station and its own emoji. Critics responded with praise to its approach to ageing and death.

Listening

Listening tip. In Janey Needs A Shooter, listen to the band, which sounds live and raw. Bear in mind that this song dates from before Springsteen's 1973 debut.
