Taking Tiger Mountain (by Strategy)

Taking Tiger Mountain (by Strategy) · For his second solo album, Eno worked differently from on the debut. Instead of sixteen guests he used a regular core of five musicians: himself, Phil Manzanera, Brian Turrington, Freddie Smith and Robert Wyatt. The title comes from postcards of a Chinese revolutionary opera. To help the musicians along, Eno made cards with instructions together with Peter Schmidt, the Oblique Strategies, which during the recording determined what happened next.
The record is a loose concept album about espionage and the Chinese revolution, with lyrics that Eno made from nonsense syllables. The sound is calmer than on the debut, the themes are darker and the lyrics often humorous. Burning Airlines Give You So Much More was inspired by a plane crash near Paris in 1974. Phil Collins plays additional drums on Mother Whale Eyeless. The record did not chart, but received positive reviews and later attracted more attention.
