Ultra Wave

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Ultra Wave was released in November 1980 on Warner Bros. Records and was the fifth album by funk musician Bootsy Collins. It was the first record to appear under his own name alone, whereas the earlier albums had been by Bootsy's Rubber Band. George Clinton and Collins produced the album together, except for three tracks, Is That My Song, Fat Cat and Sound Crack, which Collins did alone. Recording ran at the same time as that of Sweat Band, a project led by Collins. Like the previous record, this is a more experimental and more progressive album.

Well-known names took part in the recording, including the horn players Fred Wesley and Maceo Parker. A Canadian newspaper called Fat Cat a vicious dance number and Sacred Flower beautiful, full and deep in the background. In 2007 the album was reissued via Rhino Records.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Sacred Flower and notice the full, deep sounds in the background, with the solo on the lyricon.
