New Morning
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Four months after the notorious Self Portrait, Bob Dylan came out with New Morning. It looked like a hasty reaction to the criticism, but a large part of the album was already finished when Self Portrait was released. Recording took place in May and June 1970 at Columbia Studios in New York. Al Kooper took part as co-producer, but the final mix went badly, because he kept changing his mind.
Some of the songs he wrote for the play Scratch, a musical version of The Devil and Daniel Webster. These became New Morning and Father of Night, among others. He withdrew from the project, but according to Kooper the songs formed the beginning of the album. After the controversial previous record, it was above all his familiar, somewhat nasal voice that came as a relief. The press and the fans were far more positive. The album reached number seven in the United States. If Not for You also became an international hit for Olivia Newton-John.
