Nashville Skyline

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Johnny Cash had already said in 1965 that he would like to make a Nashville album with Bob Dylan. It took until 1969 before that happened. Nashville Skyline built on the rustic style of John Wesley Harding, but went completely into country music. The songs are simple and homely, and he sings in a soft country voice that listeners had not heard from him before. He had temporarily given up smoking.

Cash sings along on Girl from the North Country. The album was released on 9 April 1969, promotion ran partly through Cash's television show, and it became one of his best-selling records. Critics mostly reacted positively. Paul Nelson wrote in Rolling Stone that the album made a deep, human statement about being happy. Others felt something was missing. Kris Kristofferson later said that Dylan opened all the doors in Nashville and brought a new audience there, so that the country scene was never the same again.

Listening tip. Listen to the two voices of Dylan and Johnny Cash in Girl from the North Country. Notice how different Dylan sounds here from on his earlier records.
