Geogaddi

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Geogaddi is the second studio album by the Scottish duo Boards of Canada, released on 18 February 2002 on Warp Records. Between 1999 and 2001 the two recorded more than ninety tracks in their studio Hexagon Sun in the Pentland Hills, and chose 22 that fitted the mood they were after. They wanted to make a large, psychedelic whole, darker than their debut Music Has the Right to Children.

The sound consists of heavily processed samples and analogue sounds, with acoustic instruments and flutes that have been heavily treated. Inspiration came from the Incredible String Band and the film The Wicker Man. The themes are numerology, paganism and religious cults, with hidden messages and reversed sounds. Warp sent no promotional copies to journalists, but held listening sessions in churches. The critical response was very positive: the record appeared in many best-of-2002 lists and is regarded as a defining work of intelligent dance music.
