Music Has the Right to Children
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Music Has the Right to Children is the debut album by Boards of Canada, the Scottish brothers Michael Sandison and Marcus Eoin. It was released in 1998 on Warp and Skam Records. They made it in their own studio Hexagon Sun in the Pentland Hills, after two earlier EPs, Twoism and Hi Scores. Both labels wanted to release the record, so they released it together. The brothers used samplers, deliberately detuned old synthesizers, drum machines and tape recorders.
The sound is warm, grainy and nostalgic. There are samples from Sesame Street and from American and Canadian television programmes of the seventies, often with distorted voices. In Rue the Whirl, birdsong ended up on the tape by accident because the window was open. The brothers let it stay. Critics responded with praise and the album is regarded as a milestone of electronic music. It inspired later artists.
