Heaven and Hell

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Heaven and Hell · In 1979 Black Sabbath was in disarray. Ozzy Osbourne had left and the new singer Ronnie James Dio met the guitarist Tony Iommi through Sharon Arden. On their first day together they finished Children of the Sea, a song that Iommi had left lying. The line-up remained shaky: drummer Bill Ward was struggling with personal problems and bassist Geezer Butler was going through a divorce. Dio suggested Martin Birch as producer, the first outsider behind the controls since Master of Reality. Recording took place at Criteria Studios in Miami and Studios Ferber in Paris.

Iommi noticed that Dio sang differently from Osbourne. Whereas Osbourne followed the melody of the riff, Dio sang across it, which opened up new possibilities for Iommi. The album was released on 18 April 1980 and was a great success, especially in America, where it went platinum. It was the group's ninth record and the first with Dio.

Listening tip. Listen to Heaven and Hell and notice how Dio's vocal rides over the riff instead of following it.
