Mob Rules

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Mob Rules is Black Sabbath's tenth studio album and came out on 4 November 1981. It followed Heaven and Hell and brought singer Ronnie James Dio for the second time and drummer Vinny Appice for the first time on a record by the band. Appice had replaced Bill Ward halfway through the Heaven and Hell tour. The first new recording was The Mob Rules for the film Heavy Metal. The band had bought a studio of their own, but could not get a good guitar sound there and ultimately recorded the album at Record Plant in Los Angeles. Martin Birch produced, for the last time.

Reviews were mixed at first. AllMusic called the album underrated and praised the spirited mix, although the sequence closely resembles that of Heaven and Hell. Later it was mostly judged favourably. In England it reached the top twenty, with two singles: The Mob Rules and Turn Up the Night.

Listening

Listening tip. In The Sign of the Southern Cross, listen to Geezer Butler's bass effects; he names this his favourite song on the album.
