Master of Reality

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Master of Reality · Black Sabbath was already a successful band in 1971, despite the criticism of their music. After the debut and Paranoid, the group recorded the third album at Island Studios in London, from February to April. Rodger Bain produced, for the last time. There was more time than before and the band dared to experiment: Tony Iommi added classical guitar parts and Bill Ward tried overdubs.

The sound comes from tuning down. Iommi tuned his guitar a tone and a half lower, partly because, after an accident to his fingertips, he was in pain when playing, and Geezer Butler did the same with his bass. The result was bigger, heavier and drier, audible in Children of the Grave, Lord of This World and Into the Void. Sweet Leaf is about the weed the band smoked. Critics were negative, but the album is now regarded as one of the best heavy metal records.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Children of the Grave and notice the heavy, low guitar riff and the galloping rhythm beneath it.
