The Tale of the Tape
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
The Tale of the Tape · Billy Squier made his first solo album in 1980, after having previously recorded two albums with the band Piper. He produced it together with Eddy Offord and himself played vocals, guitar and percussion. The guitarist Bruce Kulick and the keyboardist David Sancious took part, and the Woodstock Children's Chorus sang on the record.
The album was not a great success, but it spent three months on the American album chart and helped launch his solo career. No track reached the singles charts. The Big Beat, however, has often been sampled by hip hop artists since, including in Here We Go by Run-D.M.C. and in 99 Problems by Jay-Z. The song also had a video from before the MTV era. Billboard felt that the album fitted well alongside Journey and Styx.
