Southern Rain

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Southern Rain is the sixth studio album by the American country singer Billy Ray Cyrus. He recorded it for Monument Records, after leaving Mercury in 1999, and released it in October 2000. He wrote the title song in his back garden during a rainstorm, while feeling gloomy about that departure. Many of the other tracks came to him through producers and the label. The opener You Won't Be Lonely Now was the first song he recorded.

We the People was intended as an event and features Waylon Jennings and John Anderson reciting the preamble of the United States Constitution. The George W. Bush campaign chose it as its theme song. Hey Elvis, a cover of Bryan Adams, is on the record as a bonus track. The album produced five singles on the country charts. Critical reception was mixed: AllMusic spoke of solid, average country songs.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to All I'm Thinking About Is You: notice the spoken verses, which Cyrus himself found different from anything he had recorded before.
