Some Gave All

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Some Gave All · This debut album was released in 1992 on Mercury Records. That year it became the best-selling album in the United States, with more than nine million copies in the first year. It stood at the top of the Billboard 200 for seventeen weeks in a row, longer than any debut. Four singles reached the country charts: Could've Been Me, Wher'm I Gonna Live?, She's Not Cryin' Anymore and above all Achy Breaky Heart.

Achy Breaky Heart was the singer's breakthrough and reached the top in several countries. Thanks to the video, line dancing became a craze. The song had previously been recorded by the Marcy Brothers. The reviewer Robert Christgau felt that the singer overdid it and praised the self-mockery in three tracks. In 2006 Q magazine placed the album on a list of the worst albums. Even so, it is one of the best-selling debut albums ever.
