Workers Playtime

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Workers Playtime by Billy Bragg was released in 1988 on Go! Discs and was his fourth release but third full album. Joe Boyd and the guitarist Wiggy produced. Alongside him play, among others, Danny Thompson on double bass, Cara Tivey on piano and organ, B.J. Cole on pedal steel, and Michelle Shocked sings backing vocals. It is thus a full line-up.

The record reached eighteenth place on the English chart. The sleeve carries the subtitle Capitalism Is Killing Music, a joke on the campaign Home Taping Is Killing Music. A maximum price was also stated on it: the LP or cassette was not allowed to cost more than 4.99 pounds in England. In 2006 an expanded reissue appeared with demos and a track by Paul Weller.
