Don’t Try This at Home

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Don’t Try This at Home · Don't Try This at Home is Billy Bragg's sixth album and was released on 16 September 1991 on Go! Discs. The urban folk singer brought in remarkable guests. Johnny Marr of The Smiths co-wrote Sexuality and helped produce three tracks, and Michael Stipe and Peter Buck of R.E.M. play on You Woke Up My Neighbourhood.

The songs vary widely. Cindy of a Thousand Lives is about the photographer Cindy Sherman, God's Footballer about the footballer Peter Knowles, who quit to become a Jehovah's Witness. Tank Park Salute is about his father Dennis, who died when he was 18. Dolphins is a version of a song by Fred Neil. Reviews were positive: a critic at NME called it his best album, and Select wrote that he had freed himself from every pigeonhole.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Tank Park Salute and follow the lyrics: notice how a very personal story about a father is told in just over three minutes.
