WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? · This debut album was released on 29 March 2019, when Billie Eilish was seventeen. She wrote it largely with her brother Finneas O'Connell, who produced it in his small bedroom studio in Highland Park, Los Angeles. They chose that room for its homely atmosphere and because a studio was expensive and had little daylight. The title comes from a line in Bury a Friend. Lucid dreams and nightmares were part of the inspiration for the album.
It sounds like electropop and art pop, with influences from hip hop and industrial. The production centres on amplified bass, minimal percussion and extra sounds. The lyrics deal with youth today, addiction, heartbreak and mental health, with humour and horror. Bad Guy became a worldwide hit. The album received glowing reviews and in 2020 won the Grammy for Album of the Year, alongside three other major Grammys for Eilish and Finneas.
