Happier Than Ever

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Happier Than Ever · Billie Eilish wrote the album with her brother Finneas O'Connell, who also produced it and played all the instruments. They recorded it between April 2020 and February 2021 in his home studio in the basement of his house in Los Angeles, beginning with my future and ending with Oxytocin. Self-reflection during the coronavirus pandemic was her greatest inspiration. She said that almost no song is cheerful, despite the title.

It sounds calmer than the debut: downtempo pop with sober, jazzy electropop arrangements, acoustic guitars and soft synthesizers. The lyrics deal with the downside of fame, abuse and mistrust. Getting Older opens the album, Your Power is a gentle acoustic ballad. The album received glowing reviews and seven Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year, and reached number 1 in the United States.
