Still Bill

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Still Bill is Bill Withers's second studio album and was released on 1 May 1972 on Sussex Records. Withers recorded and produced it himself, with musicians from the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band. His first album was Just as I Am. The music mixes soul, funk and blues, and the lyrics deal with human nature, emotions and sex, seen from a male middle-class perspective.

The album contains two of his best-known songs. Lean on Me became number 1 on both the pop chart and the R&B chart of Billboard, and Use Me reached number 2. By September 1972 the album had already gone gold. Reviews were positive: Rolling Stone found it stronger and more relaxed than his debut, and later critics called it a classic of the 1970s. The production is sparse, with in Use Me a famous guitar motif by Ray Jackson.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Use Me and notice the catchy motif that carries the song, and how sober the rest of the accompaniment is.
