Place to Be
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
The pianist Benny Green recorded The Place to Be in 1994 for the Blue Note label. He played with his trio, with Christian McBride on bass and Kenny Washington on drums. On three tracks a horn section joins the trio, with arrangements by Bob Belden: Nice Pants, I Want to Talk About You and I Felt That. A tuba and a horn are thus also part of the line-up.
The record mixes original compositions with standards and lesser-known pieces by, among others, Billy Eckstine, Clare Fischer, Freddie Hubbard and Oscar Peterson. Scott Yanow of AllMusic heard in this playing the influence of Peterson and other predecessors, but also a musical voice of his own. William Grimm wrote on All About Jazz that he is an accomplished jazz pianist who commands the older styles, from stride to bebop.
