To the 5 Boroughs
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
To the 5 Boroughs · This sixth record was released on 14 June 2004, the group's first major release since Hello Nasty in 1998. The album looks back at New York after the attacks of 11 September. The first single, Ch-Check It Out, could already be heard in the series The O.C. before the record came out. Triple Trouble, Right Right Now Now and An Open Letter to NYC followed.
The group samples a lot of old hip hop. Rhyme the Rhyme Well features the voice of Chuck D of Public Enemy and That's It That's All a sample of Rock Box by Run-DMC. Reviewers appreciated the simple beats without the frills that, according to one critic, made Hello Nasty distracting. Rolling Stone called the album fast, funny and sobering, and PopMatters the best record since Paul's Boutique. It was nominated for a Grammy for best rap album.
