King Tubbys Meets Rockers Uptown
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
King Tubbys Meets Rockers Uptown · This 1976 dub record is the work of Augustus Pablo and King Tubby. The sessions with the musicians were recorded at Randy's studio in Kingston, Jamaica. Pablo produced and played melodica, piano, organ and clavinet, with Carlton Barrett on drums, Robbie Shakespeare and Aston Barrett on bass and Earl Chinna Smith on guitar. He then took the tapes to King Tubby, who mixed the tracks. The title track is a dub version of Baby I Love You So by Jacob Miller, which Pablo also produced.
According to Lloyd Bradley, most of the tracks are spectacular remixes of earlier hits or new versions of old Studio One rhythms. Steve Barrow wrote that the record proved that a studio engineer could be as creative as singers, musicians and producers. It later ranked high on lists of the best albums, and according to MusicHound World no earlier dub record had been so influential.
