Beach Samba

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Beach Samba is a studio album by Astrud Gilberto from 1967, with arrangements by Eumir Deodato and Don Sebesky and produced by Creed Taylor. It is included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.

The choice of songs is more pop-oriented than on her earlier records for Verve: besides Brazilian songs there are covers such as Misty Roses by Tim Hardin and You Didn't Have to Be So Nice. According to AllMusic it is one of her less impressive albums of the 1960s, although some of the pop choices work well. The reviewer Richie Unterberger particularly praised Não Bate O Coração, in which she scat-sings with confidence and cheek.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Não Bate O Coração and notice the scat, in which the singer lets loose as she rarely did.
