Surf Ride

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Surf Ride is an album by the alto saxophonist Art Pepper with recordings from 1952 to 1954, released as an LP on Savoy in 1956. The tracks come from three sessions in Los Angeles, on 4 March 1952, 29 March 1953 and 25 August 1954. The accompaniment therefore varies. The pianists are Russ Freeman, Hampton Hawes and Claude Williamson, and at the last session Jack Montrose joins on tenor saxophone.

Pepper wrote almost all of the pieces himself, with titles such as Surf Ride, Chili Pepper and Straight Life. Tickle Toe is by Lester Young and The Way You Look Tonight by Dorothy Fields and Jerome Kern. Scott Yanow wrote in AllMusic that the music is brilliant but the packaging leaves something to be desired. The whole is rather arbitrarily assembled, while Pepper is in great form throughout.
