Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section · Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section is a jazz album from 1957. Pepper plays alto saxophone, together with Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums, the celebrated rhythm section of Miles Davis at the time. The record was made on 19 January 1957 at Contemporary's Studios in Los Angeles.
According to Pepper, it became a session under great pressure. He only heard of the recording that morning, did not know the other musicians and admired them all. His instrument was in poor condition and he was struggling with a drug problem. The album is regarded as a milestone in his career. The critic Ben Ratliff wrote that Pepper, unprepared, had to draw the music out of himself. The Penguin Jazz Guide called it a poetic, searing session in which all four men rose above themselves.
