Yours Truly · Work on this debut album began in August 2010, during the filming of the series Victorious. In 2011 Ariana Grande signed with Republic Records. The songs took shape over almost two years, with Harmony Samuels, Babyface and Leon Thomas III among the producers. She was dissatisfied with the first direction and wanted to make the music she herself had grown up with: 1990s urban pop.

The sound is pop and R&B, with influences from 1990s hip hop, 1950s piano pop and doo-wop. She named Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Amy Winehouse and Christina Aguilera as inspirations. The record opens with Honeymoon Avenue, a quiet song in doo-wop style. The Way, with Mac Miller, was the first single and reached number nine in the American Hot 100. Critics particularly praised her singing.
