Fire Music

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Fire Music was released in 1965 on Impulse! Records. Malcolm, Malcolm Semper Malcolm is dedicated to Malcolm X, and Los Olvidados is a tribute to the 1950 film of the same name. Besides Archie Shepp on tenor saxophone, the players are trumpeter Ted Curson, trombonist Joe Orange, alto saxophonist Marion Brown, bassist Reggie Johnson and drummer Joe Chambers. The CD edition adds a live track, recorded at the Village Gate on 28 March 1965.

In the piece for Malcolm X, the leader himself recites a text. Bassist David Izenzon and drummer J.C. Moses play on it. There are also two pieces by others: Prelude to a Kiss by Ellington and The Girl from Ipanema. AllMusic found the album somewhat uneven but recommended. All About Jazz called it challenging and yet accessible to most listeners.
