This Time

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

This Time was released in 1980 on Warner Bros. Records and was the fourth studio album by the jazz singer Al Jarreau. Jay Graydon produced the record. The sound shifted towards R&B, with synthesizers, Fender Rhodes and a horn section. Studio musicians such as bassist Abraham Laboriel and drummer Steve Gadd provided the rhythm section.

That change of course worked. It was his first album in the top 40 of the Billboard 200 and in the top 10 of the R&B chart, and it topped the jazz chart. Never Givin' Up earned a Grammy nomination in 1981 for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. That award went to George Benson, who had just made a comparable change of style.

Listening

Listening tip. In Never Givin' Up, listen to the voice: the singer does not merely sing the melody but also works as percussion. Notice how the horns and synthesizers around it create a polished sound.
