Let’s Stay Together
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Let’s Stay Together · This fourth album by Al Green was released on 31 January 1972, as the follow-up to Al Green Gets Next to You. It was recorded at Royal Recording Studio in Memphis, under the direction of producer Willie Mitchell, for the third time. The accompaniment came from the Hi Rhythm Section, including the Hodges brothers, supplemented by horns and backing vocalists.
The title song became Green's trademark and his only pop number one. The album also contains his version of How Can You Mend a Broken Heart by the Bee Gees, which Q later described as the soul ballad taken to a new level of refinement. Critics above all praised the voice: Rolling Stone called it a marvel, one that can croon, shout and soar in a soft falsetto. The album topped the soul chart and ushered in his classic period, a series of acclaimed albums.
