Highway to Hell

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Highway to Hell · By 1978 AC/DC had released five albums and toured extensively, but Atlantic Records in America wanted a more radio-friendly sound. The first producer, Eddie Kramer, clashed with the band. Then came Mutt Lange, and with him the sixth album. From 24 March to 14 April 1979 the band worked at Roundhouse Studios in London, often fifteen hours a day, honing the songs. Lange, himself a trained singer, taught Bon Scott to breathe better and also sang along on the melodic backing vocals. That polish did not take away the band's rough sound.

The title track is the best-known song. Atlantic did not like the title, but Angus Young explained that it describes the experience of touring. Lange had Angus play his solo beside him and pointed out the notes on the guitar neck. It was the last album with Bon Scott, who died on 19 February 1980.
