People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm · The debut was released in April 1990 on Jive Records. A Tribe Called Quest came from Queens and, together with the Jungle Brothers and De La Soul, formed the Native Tongues collective. Record labels initially did not want the group, because their image and sound were too idiosyncratic. Only after the success of 3 Feet High and Rising, on which Q-Tip could be heard, did a contract follow. Recording began at Calliope Studios at the end of 1989 and took three months. There Q-Tip learned to work with samplers and arranged almost everything himself, while Ali Shaheed Muhammad played the instruments and cut the scratches.

The sound is relaxed and playful. Q-Tip used jazz, R&B and rock that other producers ignored, and added crying children, frogs and Hawaiian strings. The lyrics sound like ordinary conversation. Critics were full of praise and the record is regarded as a cornerstone of alternative hip hop. It influenced many artists in hip hop and R&B.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Bonita Applebum, one of the first tracks recorded for the album: notice how loose and conversational the rapping sounds against the calm backing.
