Midnight Marauders

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Midnight Marauders is the third album by A Tribe Called Quest, released in November 1993. The recording took nine months and took place in New York studios such as Battery Studios. Q-Tip made a large part of the beats in the basement of Phife Dawg's grandmother's house. After The Low End Theory, the group felt the pressure to repeat that success. Q-Tip produced most of it himself, with help from, among others, Large Professor and DJ Ali Shaheed Muhammad.

The sound is rougher and funkier than on the previous record, with samples from jazz, funk, soul and R&B and many horn melodies. Q-Tip deliberately left the noise in the samples. The lyrics are socially aware, positive and full of humour. Critics were largely positive. Writers have since come to regard the album as a high point of the Native Tongues movement and of 1990s hip hop.

Listening

Listening tip. In Award Tour, listen to the bass line and the way the two rappers alternate. Notice how smoothly the beat keeps rolling.
