Drum machine

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Technology

Drum machine · In 1959, the organ manufacturer Wurlitzer released the Side Man, a cabinet with a rotating disc that triggered electronic drum sounds in the rhythm of a waltz, rumba or foxtrot. It was intended for organists in bars and restaurants, who thus did not have to pay a drummer. Later, electronic organs had such rhythms built in. In 1971, Sly Stone made a Maestro Rhythm King the basis of his record There's a Riot Goin' On. The stiff, dry rhythm suddenly sounded tired and menacing. Timmy Thomas set an organ with built-in rhythms to a bossa nova, and Shuggie Otis jammed for hours with his own drum machine.

Listening

Listening tip. The rhythm comes from a machine: does it sound like a drummer, or do you hear precisely the mechanical quality of it?
