Raï
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Raï comes from Oran in Algeria, where singers in cafés and at parties sang folk songs about love, drink and life, subjects that did not fit in traditional music. In the 1980s, synthesizers, drum machines and electric guitars were added: pop raï. Singers were given the title Cheb, ‘young man’; Cheb Khaled became the best known and also scored a hit in Europe with Didi (1992).
Listening
Listening tip. In Didi, hear the synthesizers and the drum machine beneath the Arabic singing with its long ornaments.
