Cheikha Rimitti

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Cheikha Rimitti, born as Saadia El Ghizania in Tessala in western Algeria, made her first record in 1952. She sang in street language about longing, drink and poverty, subjects that until then had been heard only privately at weddings, and her hit Charrak Gatta shocked conservative listeners. Younger raï singers called her the mother of the genre. On Sidi Mansour (1994) Flea and Robert Fripp played with her.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Charragt, a later recording of her early hit: her raw voice is up front, carried by a stomping rhythm.
